The quality of photos is great, with very quick autofocus, and using a zoom lens with the IS feature still gives very sharp images. There is a learning curve with all the features on the camera, and searching through the menu or book takes some time to learn, but using the features makes them easier to remember. Indoors and in flash situations, I haven’t found a way to MAKE it take a picture even with the flash unit raised. Seems it wants to find its own focus rather than my manual focus, or something other, but this is the only irritating thing about the camera. I love my new camera! The pictures are very sharp and colors are amazing. I only have the kit lens and so far, I am really happy with the quality of the pictures. This is my first DSLR camera, and I purchased this one because of the HD video recording capability. I use an 8 gb Sandisk Extreme III SDHC with it (as recommended by another reviewer) and I have not had any problems with video recording or playback. I do suggest using a Speedlite 430EX with it if you intend to take a lot of indoor pictures or anywhere where there is poor lighting. The flash on this camera is powerful but can only do so much. I borrowed one from a friend and my pictures came out better with the Speedlite. As long as you don’t use live view, battery life is great. I was able to take pictures and videos all day long (about 12 hours) at Magic Kingdom without having to change the battery. If you are thinking about getting the XSi, get this one instead. Is T1i an upgrade to XSi? After using T1i for three months, I decided to go back to XSi. I am not happy with T1i’s video, which attracted me for the purchase, and it is the big selling point for T1i, but it is also my biggest disappointment. It is not easy to operate, not like a camcorder. The high definition is 24 slides/second at 1080, and 30 at 720, so it is not a real HD.

The image file size is now 15m but reading some more reviews, people are saying the processor is not capable of it.

Hey everyone,

I pre-ordered this Camera a few weeks ago, they kept moving back the estimated stock date. Then I checked it today and it says estimated delivery tomorrow.
They’ve since started selling from an alternate Amazon vendor at $200 more than MSRP. I thought that a bit strange, seeing as how I had not received a shipping notice, and they were already selling it from an alternate source.

I contacted Amazon customer service directly and was told “Their vendor had not filled amazons order yet, and they had not had the chance to update the availability listed on the item’s page.”

Might have been nice if they had alerted me to this “minor fact” instead of BSing me so they could keep their high ticket sale.

Do your selves a favor; If you live in any state besides NY order from B and H photo. No sales tax, they have great customer service, and reasonable prices. (In this case: MSRP. Imagine that.)

I use Amazon constantly, and rarely have problems but this is a pretty screw up. If I had not looked into this issue, It could have cost my company thousands of dollars in lost revenue as I needed this Camera today. I figured others may find this information useful.

I rated 5 Stars with the intention of revising it in the future, because I have no doubts about the performance vs price ratio on this Camera. It gives Prosumer a whole new meaning. I will update my review in a few weeks if I’m wrong.

This was my first SLR since converting to digital. I previously had a 35mm Canon Rebel that I loved although it was rather basic and old, then I had a Canon Powershot which was good. I was hesitant to switch to a digital SLR because I thought the Powershot was all that I would ever need; after all my old Rebel film camera was lacking in features and took average shots – so a point-and-shoot digital was better. Why would I need anything more than a point-and-shoot?

I was so wrong. The Canon Rebel XSi is an awesome camera, loaded with useful features that are easy to figure out. The Rebel line has come a long way in innovation since going digital, and the control and quality of a DSLR cannot be touched with a point-and-shoot. I still like my point-and-shoot because I can keep it in my pocket for easy traveling; but the XSi is my main camera.

If you are new to digital SLRs, or new to SLRs, or new to photography; or upgrading from a point-and-shoot — this is the camera for you. If you have the extra money for the T1i, it’s a little better with video; but the XSi is still great for photography.

I have had my Rebel 1000D XS for a few months now and have fallen in love with it. I have been a great photo enthusiast for a long time now (20yrs.) and felt it time to take it serious. I’m sure that I will be upgrading in the near future but not because this camera cannot do the job. It has a great list of features and I have had no problems with it at all. I purchased it new and shortly afterwards have purchased a 55-250 IS lens for it and now my field of use has widened. There is a few things that I’m sure could have been different on this model such as more AF points and the rubberized coating but for the price it’s a great bargain. I have since my purchase become a semi-pro photographer working for a friend and her company photographing daycare’s and some other get togethers. I work part-time now for her and I simply love the fact that it has turned into something that I love and can make money at. The XSi is a great digital body, and should probably be bought that way (i.e., without a lens), so that you can save the money you would have spent on a barely-adequate kit lens to put towards something far better, such as the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens. While this Rebel has been superceded by the newer Canon EOS Rebel T1i, this model still provides excellent bang for the buck, and even exceeds the performance of the T1i in some respects.

Others have written at length and in great detail about the features and performance of this camera, so I’ll just touch on a few highlights and some important distinctions between this and the newer model, the T1i. This model uses the same size digital sensor (APS-C) with fewer megapixels than the newer body. This fact, together with the less agressive noise-reduction implemented by the older DIGIC III processor in this camera, means that the XSi can provide lower noise in lower-light situations than the T1i, while still providing more than enough pixels to print even cropped sections of your photos up to 11×14.

By foregoing the video recording mode, DIGIC IV processor and high-resolution screen found on the T1i, the XSi body leaves more room in your budget for some important accessories, such as the 17-55 f/2.8 lens mentioned above, and one of the must-have Speedlite flashes, such as the top-of-the-line Canon Speedlite 580EX II or the still-very-much-worth-having Canon Speedlite 430EX II.
